How Do I Install Cutting Edge™?
Cutting Edge™ is applied like other types of grass seed. Our basic recommendations for a new lawn are as follows: 1) Apply at least 3/4 inch of topsoil, completely covering the intended site. 2) Broadcast one lb. per 200 sq ft of Cutting Edge™ blend. 3) Apply organic starter fertilizer to help germinate the seeds. 4) Water thoroughly with light spray. Be careful not to wash seeds away. 4) Keep moist for approximately one month, depending on climatic conditions. 5) Once grass initially reaches 3 inches, mow a few times to assist in root cultivation. Mow no more than 1/3 of the blade at a time. Roots will begin growing deeply. It's best to avoid high heat in the first few months of growth. Each lawn may be different, so for proper instructions for your particular location, please don't hesitate to contact us.
What's the Difference Between Planting in the Spring and Planting in the Fall?
Cool, fall weather, when the average ground temperature is around 60 degrees, is the recommended time for planting most lawns, including Cutting Edge™. This is because the last growth characteristics to develop in Cutting Edge™ are the rhizomes. The rhizomes are the horizontal growth of roots and shoots that help fill in a lawn and complete the lawn coverage. This filling-in of the lawn helps crowd out crabgrass and weeds. If you plant in cool, fall-like weather, the weeds are generally dying and the grass will therefore have less competition. This, of course, is good. If you plant in the spring, weeds are typically germinating, more active and are thus more likely to end up competing with your lawn as it tries to establish itself. Another disadvantage of starting your lawn in the spring, especially in high heat climates, is that the short spring growing period may not leave enough time for Cutting Edge's ™ deep root structure to fully establish itself. Bottom line: if possible, start your Cutting Edge™ lawn in the fall.
Will Cutting Edge™ Work on My Lawn?
Cutting Edge™ has been successfully installed throughout North America with great success. Because of its unique blend of 8 cultivars, Cutting Edge™ does well in most environments and soil conditions. It performs well in both warm and cold climates, varied soil types and direct sun or moderate shade. We believe Cutting Edge™ is a groundbreaking blend. We’re confident you’ll feel the same way. But some common sense: For Cutting Edge’s™ features to fully perform, the lawn must be established and results may vary subject to local soil and environmental conditions.
Is Cutting Edge™ a Texas Hybrid?
No, a Texas Hybrid is a genetically altered species of Bluegrass/Crabgrass that can grow in Texas and is very thick bladed. Many consider it an unattractive grass.
Can I Just Overseed with Cutting Edge™?
Yes, Cutting Edge™ can be overseeded over existing lawns. After several years of overseeding (ideally every spring and fall) Cutting Edge™ will eventually take over your old lawn. There are some warm weather C-4 grasses that Cutting Edge™ will not take over, such as Bermuda grass. In either case, since you will not be receiving the full benefits of your Cutting Edge™ lawn until it is your predominant grass you might want to consider the advantages of installing a new Cutting Edge™ lawn vs. overseeding.
Will Cutting Edge™ Ruin My Septic System, Other Plants or Trees?
While Cutting Edge™ may grow roots up to 48 inches, the roots are still as thin and fine as standard grass roots. It is therefore unlikely that these roots will be able to penetrate your septic system or other piping, or overpower other plant or tree roots.
Is This an Invasive Grass?
No, Cutting Edge™ is not an "invasive grass", like, for example, Bermuda grass. Cutting Edge™ essentially grows where planted and its rhizomes will spread horizontally about 3-6 inches. Cutting Edge™ will not spread into adjacent flower beds or a neighbor’s lawn any more aggressively than other typical quality grass blends.
Can Cutting Edge™ be Hydroseeded?
Cutting Edge™ is excellent for hydroseeding applications.
Will Cutting Edge™ Grow in Shade?
Cutting Edge™ works equally well in both sunny and shady areas.
When Is the Best Time to Plant Cutting Edge™?
Like a regular lawn, fall weather is the best time to plant Cutting Edge™ when the average ground temperature is around 60 degrees.
How Fast Will Cutting Edge™ Grow In?
There are 8 different cultivars in the Cutting Edge™ blend. Each cultivar will germinate at a different time. The first cultivars will germinate between 5-7 days. The last two cultivars to germinate will be the Kentucky Bluegrasses. They tend to germinate between 20-28 days. If you hydroseed, you will often get somewhat faster germination times.
Will Cutting Edge™ Roots Automatically Grow to 48 Inches?
No, Cutting Edge™ roots will ONLY grow to what is necessary. For example: if your local water table creates sufficient soil moisture 6 inches below the ground surface, your Cutting Edge™ roots will not have to search beyond that depth for water. Conversely, if the water table is deeper, Cutting Edge™ roots will search deeper to make up for that lack of sufficient soil moisture. Cutting Edge™ achieving roots of up to 48 inches also depends on local soil and environmental conditions.
What Size Bags does Cutting Edge™ Come in and is Cutting Edge™ available in Sod?
Cutting Edge™ is currently available in 50lb and 25lb bags. Cutting Edge™ Sod as well as 5lb bags should be available soon.
Can Cutting Edge™ Handle Dog Urine?
No, unfortunately the ammonia in dog urine will cause any grass to die, including Cutting Edge™ Grass.
